Program Overview

The Doctor of Pharmacy & Master of Business Administration (Pharm.D., MBA) concurrent program lets you complete rigorous pharmacy training while building advanced business acumen. Through a partnership between the MUSC College of Pharmacy and The Citadel, you gain deep knowledge of patient care, pharmacotherapy, and pharmacy law, alongside formal training in management, finance, and strategic leadership. This program structure prepares graduates for dynamic careers across institutional pharmacy, healthcare administration, pharmaceutical industry, and management of pharmacy services.

Learning Experience

Students engage in an integrated curriculum that combines professional pharmacy coursework and business administration studies that build clinical pharmacy and business expertise at the same time.

The MBA curriculum is comprised of 36 credit hours (2 essentials courses, 7 core courses, 2 electives, and 1 capstone). In keeping with The Citadel’s mission of facilitating the development of highly effective leaders, all students are required to take and complete LDRS 500 Principled Leadership Seminar in their first semester. There is no charge for seminar participation. Most MBA courses are available in an accelerated, condensed format, allowing students more flexibility in scheduling their courses and balancing the two curriculum. Courses are taught as hybrid or completely online, and students should strategize with their Academic Advisor to create a completion plan that works for them. The concurrent degree program will neither displace nor rearrange any of the core Pharm.D. courses. Several MBA courses that will be accepted for Pharm.D. elective credit hours. A maximum of six elective hours can be transferred and require a grade of B or better. The accepted classes include the following required courses:

  • ACCT710, Accounting for Executives
  • ENTR710, Managing Innovation
  • FINC710, Corporate Financial Management
  • MGMT710, Ethical Leadership and Organizational Behavior
  • MGMT712, Information Technology Management
  • MKTG710, Strategic Marketing

A maximum of six credit hours from the Pharm.D. program will also be accepted as elective credit in The Citadel’s MBA program. The accepted classes include the following

  • COP725, Outcomes Design and Assessment (P2 year, required)
  • COP805, Pharmacy Law and Ethics (P3 year, required)
  • Other approved Pharmacy Practice or Administrative electives

Your Path to Admission

Although the MBA program has traditionally required a bachelor’s degree, they have agreed to accept Pharm.D. students who have completed a total of 124 credit hours. Students can apply during the semester they are finishing up their 124 hours. Pharm.D. students may apply to The Citadel to begin any semester, but are encouraged to start during the Summer after their P1 year.

MUSC Pharm.D. students must submit an online application, official undergraduate transcript(s), official MUSC transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a resume for admission. Financial Aid Awards

Students from MUSC’s Pharm.D. program who enroll in The Citadel’s MBA program concurrently will be given four tuition waiver awards at the time of admission. Students should confirm with The Citadel Financial Aid Office when they wish to use an award after registration. Each award is the equivalent of the cost of in-state tuition for one (1) 3 credit hour course. Only one award can be processed for each semester. The Pharm.D./MBA award does not include the costs of fees, textbooks, or materials associated with the course. Non-resident students will have to pay the tuition difference. Students must remain in good standing in the MBA Program.
