Comprehensive Law Review

Faculty member David Shirley ’02 has been active in pharmacy policy issues for more than 20 years.

The MUSC College of Pharmacy offers a comprehensive law review with a focus on preparing for the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE).

The 2023 review is May 1, 2023 with a cost of $150. It will be held in-person on the MUSC campus.

David Shirley has been a staunch advocate for the profession, both as a leader in pharmacy organizations and as professor teaching students the importance of having a voice and influencing policy. During his tenure as president of the South Carolina Pharmacy Association (SCPhA), he was involved in various policy initiatives like Pharmacy Day at the State House, when pharmacy students and others meet with legislators to educate them about issues in the profession.

An active member of SCPhA for more than 20 years, he had already carved out an impressive career before turning to academics. After graduating from MUSC in 2002, he practiced independent community pharmacy in Charleston for 14 years specializing in compounding pharmacy. The first seven years he spent practicing at Prescription Center Inc. and then from 2009 until 2015 he was the pharmacist in charge and compounding pharmacist at Plantation Pharmacy.

Course Objectives

  • Review Federal statutes and regulations pertaining to the prudent and lawful practice of pharmacy
  • Participate in active learning activities to aid in understanding and retaining federal pharmacy law information
  • Review South Carolina state statutes and regulations pertaining to the prudent and lawful practice of pharmacy within South Carolina
  • Participate in active learning activities to aid in understanding and retaining South Carolina pharmacy law information
  • Review Federal and South Carolina law pertaining to the prudent and lawful practice of pharmacy as it relates to controlled substances
  • Participate in active learning activities to aid in understanding and retaining controlled substance law information
  • Participate in Pre-review session and Post-review session law practice exam questions with feedback.
  • Become familiar with Multi-state Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE) including the descriptions of, requirements to take, and study strategies to succeed in passing the exam.
