Student Calynn Dioses reflects on her PREP experience

Applying to pharmacy school can be intimidating. Two years ago, the MUSC College of Pharmacy turned its annual prospective pharmacy student open house into the Pharmacy Readiness Engagement Program (PREP) to help.

“I thought that the program was awesome and definitely calmed my nerves when I had to do the real thing — especially when I saw familiar faces at my interview.”

“The program is designed to give students an inside look at what pharmacy school is like and let them get familiar with the pharmacy admission process,” said Jenny Bagg, admission manager. “It doesn’t matter what school they want to attend. We want them to be knowledgeable enough to find the right fit and prepared enough to be successful when they apply.”

Applicationsare available online for the Summer 2019 PREP, which will be held on Friday, July 19.

Calynn Dioses is one of the ones who found the right fit at MUSC, and taking advantage of PREP provided an advantage not only in applying but also in heightened comfort once she started.

“I thought that the program was awesome and definitely calmed my nerves when I had to do the real thing -- especially when I saw familiar faces at my interview,” said the Mount Pleasant native, who earned a bachelor’s of science in biochemistry at Clemson University. “I really enjoyed the information session on all the clubs and events available throughout the semester.”

The one-day program introduces students to the many career options available in the pharmacy profession, engages students with nationally-recognized faculty -- both clinicians and researchers -- and teaches students how to prepare for admission by practicing MUSC’s interview process. For students accepted to MUSC, it also provides a running start to life in the MUSC environment.

“I also met some of my current classmates through the program and it allowed me to ease into meeting a bunch of new people during orientation week with a few familiar faces there as well,” Dioses said. “Overall, I had quite a positive experience, and I felt lucky to be selected for the program.”
