 2020 PEEP preceptor award winners

The Palmetto Experiential Education Partnership (PEEP) is proud to announce its annual PEEP Awards in recognition of the dedication and excellence of the program’s outstanding preceptors.

PEEP is a collaborative experiential education program between the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy that capitalizes on each college’s strong network of alumni preceptors and creates a broad portfolio of experiential opportunities for students.

The fundamental goal of the program is to provide students with the structured environment that they need to develop their professional judgment, technical skills and practice skills. Preceptors encourage critical thinking to solve problems and not only facilitate a student’s knowledge base, but also his or her ability to provide excellence in patient care.

Preceptors are vital to the success of the Colleges of Pharmacy and play a critical role in developing the future of our profession, according to Jennifer Baker, Pharm.D., director of the experiential programs for the UofSC College of Pharmacy. “Our preceptors open up their lives to teach and share their professional experiences with students,” she says. “It is often in these moments where future pharmacists identify their passion and drive for the professionals they want to become. We are so grateful for the dedication and service of all of our preceptors.”

The preceptors are pivotal in training our students to be leaders for the next generation,” says Elizabeth Weed, Pharm.D., director of experiential education for MUSC College of Pharmacy. “Preceptors are our lifeblood and our students’ lifeblood,” she says. “The practical application of everything they learned in school is being magnified and solidified during their rotations. It prepares them for whatever they want to go into, whether it’s a residency, community pharmacy, nuclear pharmacy or a fellowship.”

Awards are based on student nominations and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) 2016 Standards for preceptors and journal articles that identify role-modeling behaviors, attitude, facilitating behaviors, and teaching/coaching behaviors in both IPPE and APPE rotations in a variety of settings.
