It was a bold move, Cotton. And it worked out great for the CARES Clinic.

The MUSC College of Pharmacy’s chapters of Kappa Psi and Phi Delta Chi hosted a Dodgeball Tournament on April 1 at the Wellness Center Gym, raising around $250 for the nonprofit organization operated and managed by MUSC students.

“It was a fun, innovative approach to raising money for a good cause,” said Philip Hall, dean of MUSC College of Pharmacy and a participant in the tournament. “They generated a lot of interest and got a huge turnout from students, faculty, and staff.”

The CARES Clinic provides free medical care to uninsured patients 18 and older in the Charleston area.

In honor of March Madness, the Kappa Psi/Phi Delta Chi Dodgeball Tournament was a bracket-style tournament with two teams facing off in a best of three series with the winning team moving on to the next round. Following, of course, USA Dodgeball Rules. The winning team was Aim at Smit with champions Chad Harle, Dakota James, Dallin Chester Billow, Benjamin Emery, and Jacob Pritchard.

Players may have had as much fun coming up with team names as they did in the tournament. Some of the five-person teams included Ball Falls Down, The Dodge Fathers, Untouchaballs, Slumdodge Millionaires, and Ballzinga.

The event was the brainchild of planners Smit Patel, Bradley Piaskowski, Caroline Donaldson, Savannah Young, Angeleki Zecopoulos, and Sarah Smith.

(NOTE: “It was a bold move, Cotton. Let’s see how it works out for them” is a quote from the movie “Dodgeball,” which also offered this timeless advice: “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.”)
