Meet the people behind the posts: Mary Alison Burch and Sarah Wyatt

It’s no April Fool’s prank. Two students doing a rotation in the college’s advancement office are taking control of social media for the month, with the blessing and great appreciation of the administration.

Fourth-year students Sarah Wyatt and Mary Alison Burch are finishing their final rotation with a spin in the MUC College of Pharmacy Office of Advancement, under preceptor and director of development Megan Draper. The rotation is designed to offer experience in academic administration, fundraising, marketing, and communications.

The college’s Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn pages will fall largely – though not exclusively – under their auspices for the month.

Meet the people behind the posts!

Mary Alison Burch

My name is Mary Alison Burch, and I am from Lake City, South Carolina. Before pharmacy school, I attended the University of South Carolina then continued my education at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be involved in medicine after seeing firsthand how important medication is for my lifelong best friend with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Following graduation, I plan to work in community pharmacy as this gives many opportunities to interact with patients on a more personal level. My love for community pharmacy was deepened throughout my favorite rotation experience: community pharmacy in Lahaina, Hawaii. During my time in Hawaii, I was able to participate in several different activities, such as whale watching North Pacific Humpback whales, seeing the sunrise on the 10,000-foot dormant volcano Haleakalā, travel the long and winding Road to Hana, and experience a helicopter tour of Maui and the island of Molokai.

Sarah Wyatt

My name is Sarah Wyatt – I'm a P4 at the MUSC College of Pharmacy. I’m from Easley, SC, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at Clemson University prior to starting pharmacy school. During my time at Clemson University, I was able to participate in an Inpatient Pharmacy Internship at AnMed Hospital in Anderson, SC which solidified my decision to pursue a career in pharmacy. I decided to further my education at the MUSC College of Pharmacy due to the NAPLEX pass rate, the residency match rate, the large academic medical center status, and the convenient location near the beach. Since my time at the MUSC College of Pharmacy, I have pursued leadership positions, attended national pharmacy organization conferences, obtained several certifications, developed clinical knowledge on fourth-year rotations, and much more. My most cherished leadership position was serving as the 2020-2021 Phi Lambda Sigma Beta Chi President where I collaborated with our executive board (Emily Overly, Drew Sauck, and Amy Ackershoek) to host the 19th Annual Phi Lambda Sigma Beta Chi Leadership Conference – The Leader Within. After graduating this May, I will be a PGY1 pharmacy resident at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. For now, I plan to pursue a PGY2 in Emergency Medicine or Critical Care after completing the first year of residency.
