She’s a history teacher who has made a little history of her own. Lindsey Fuller recently became the MUSC College of Pharmacy’s first ever educational technology consultant.

“Technology has become as integral to teaching as a common language,” said Philip Hall, dean of the college. “It affects delivery and reception of the curriculum, as well as engagement and satisfaction with the program. It is only a tool, but it is a vital tool.”

Fuller, who has a master in art of teaching from The Citadel and a bachelor’s in history from the University of South Carolina, comes to the college from teaching social studies at Summerville High School. Navigating the pandemic while keeping the attention of world’s toughest audience turned out to be ideal preparation for the field of education technology.

“As a teacher, COVID transformed everything,” said the Charleston native, whose MUSC ties include multiple family members as current or former employees. “We had to switch to virtual education in a week. I became passionate about engaging each student virtually, finding technology that would help and that the students liked.”

MUSC is frequently an early adopter of technology, as befits an academic research center that emphasizes innovation. There are many opportunities to leverage technology, but often limited time for faculty to learn how best to do so.

“My main stakeholders at the college of pharmacy are the faculty,” Fuller said. “I want to build and empower professors to be not just content experts but also experts in using best practices in the classroom for student success.”

Fuller sees key elements in her position as

  • Be the tier one source for educational technology help or consultation
  • Focus on best practices and instructional design
  • Explore how to enrich the learning management system

She began at the college on May 2. She and her husband Corbin live on James Island with their 2 ½ year old son, Hayes.
