MUSC pharmacy associate professor Kristy Brittain has earned the 2022 “Outstanding Contributions to Self-Care & Non-Prescription Medicines” award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Self-Care Therapeutics and Non-Prescription Medicines (SCT/NM) Special Interest Group, the group announced this week.

The award recognizes sustained contributions in self-care therapeutics/non-prescription medicines by a faculty member who has demonstrated positive impact in service, scholarship, and/or teaching.

For more than 14 years, Brittain has offered a highly-regarded self-care course at the college of pharmacy. Her dynamic, team-based learning model has been very successful with students. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she managed to create an active learning classroom in a virtual setting and still maintain the core principles of team-based learning.

She has been an active player in the national network of self-care educators for many years, including serving in leadership and committee roles in the AACP SCT/NM SIG since 2012. Since 2009, she has been a prominent presence in self-care scholarship, presenting more than a dozen invited presentations on self-care.

“Dr. Brittain is an excellent teacher who is very deserving of this award,” said Kathy Chessman, professor and chair of the Clinical Pharmacy and Outcome Sciences Department. “Her passion for education, pharmacy practice, and innovation make her a leader in the College’s efforts to continually improve the education of our students and residents.”
