On Wednesday, second-year student Kristen Bordner found out she had been accepted to the highly competitive Johns Hopkins Pharmacy Internship Program for 2022.

She is one of just 26 people chosen nationally to participate in the prestigious program, which was established to offer pharmacy students a structured learning experience intended to provide a comprehensive exposure to health system pharmacy practice. Bordner applied last Fall and was actually in Baltimore when she found out she had been chosen for an interview.

"At the last minute I decided to travel to Baltimore over winter break to scope out the area in my state of outlandish optimism," she wrote. "While I was there visiting, I received the email stating that I was selected for an interview."

Outlandish? She's an accomplished student, a representative on the University Honor Council, an experienced businesswoman, is honoring her late father as she pursues a lifelong dream, and she's even a poet. For Johns Hopkins, it was less “outlandish” and more "game recognize game."

She will be working at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital in the inpatient care area. The Pediatric Pharmacy services a wide variety of patient populations, including general pediatric medical/surgical, trauma, burn, solid organ transplant, PICU, NICU, psychiatry, oncology and BMT patients. Summer interns get an overview of clinical and distributive operations and engage in projects focused on pediatric pharmacy operations, clinical service management, and quality improvement.

"I am so grateful for the opportunities that MUSC has afforded me," she said. "I am extremely elated to represent MUSC, the COP, and Charleston to my best ability this summer!"
