The MUSC College of Pharmacy shone at the 2024 Annual Convention of the South Carolina Pharmacy Association (SCPhA), as MUSC pharmacy family members Cathy Worrall and Anthony DeClue, ’16, were honored with major awards.

Worrall, associate dean of students and admissions, was named the SCPhA Pharmacist of the Year while DeClue, associate professor of clinical pharmacy and outcomes sciences, was named SCPhA Distinguished Young Pharmacist.

The awards were presented at the SCPhA Annual Convention, “Illuminating Brightness in Pharmacy,” held June 27-30 at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston.

Worrall serves on the American Pharmacists Association Board of Trustees and has won multiple national recognitions. Formerly a critical care registered nurse, Worrall earned her Pharm.D. at the University of Florida then completed a residency in critical care and nutrition support therapeutics at the University of Tennessee—Memphis. Following residency training, Worrall worked as a critical care clinical pharmacy specialist at the Mayo Medical Center in Rochester, MN, where she started Mayo's critical care pharmacy residency program. She later accepted a position at MUSC, where she specialized in burn, trauma, and nutrition support until she transitioned 12 years ago to the dean's office at the College of Pharmacy.

DeClue, who earlier this year was honored with the Emerging Leader Award by the MUSC Alumni Association, took an unusual path to pharmacy. Prior to becoming a pharmacist, he earned a master’s degree in English and then taught rhetoric at Clemson University. But pharmacy was calling. So, he earned his Pharm.D. at MUSC in 2016 and joined the college in 2017 as assistant professor of clinical pharmacy and outcomes sciences. He also now serves as director of clinical services at MUSC Family Medicine Pharmacy.
