Dachelle Johnson ’09, pharmacovigilance scientist at AstraZeneca, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Black History Month Seminar at the MUSC College of Pharmacy. The 2021 seminar will be at noon on Friday, February 26, 2021.

Pharmacovigilance scientists are typically assigned a specific drug or drug program for which they receive all the safety data, and are responsible for monitoring, assessment, literature review, and safety analyses.

Johnson first spoke at the College’s Black History Month celebration at a special event in 2018 when she was medication safety officer in the Clinical Center Pharmacy Department of the National Institutes of Health.

A highly decorated student while at MUSC who won the Pharmacy Times/Wal-Mart RESPy Award, she went on to serve two residencies at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she was hired as critical care clinical specialist. She joined the NIH in 2015 before moving to AstraZeneca in 2019.

Her career journey and experiences were featured recently on Brown Skin Stories, a podcast series about Black women pharmacists.

The College’s Black History Month Seminar was established as a way to celebrate the history and achievements of Black people, with a focus on some of the seminal moments and leadership of the College’s Black alumni. Past speakers have included the College’s first African-American graduate, alumni who have been nationally recognized for their work, community and industry leaders, and other inspirations for current students. Last year’s Black History Month Seminar featured Jean Hilaire ’10 a native-born Haitian who spent part of his fourth year volunteering in Haiti in the wake of a devastating earthquake.

The seminar will be streamed live on the College's YouTube channel at noon on Friday, February 26, 2021
