Compass 5 Partners, LLC, is the architectural firm retained by MUSC to design the new College of Pharmacy facility, along with renovations to the Basic Science Building and the James W. Colbert Education Center and Library. The Whiting-Turner Company is the general contractor.

When did the project begin?

Compass 5 Partners was hired in 2018 to prepare a feasibility study to look at student spaces, classroom spaces, and the best way to incorporate the College of Pharmacy into a more central location on campus

When will construction begin?

Site work has already begun. Actual construction is planned to start in the early summer of 2021.

When will the College of Pharmacy building be complete?

Occupation of the facility is planned for summer of 2022.

What will the outside look like?

The College of Pharmacy facility will be two stories with materials made from precast stone, a curtain wall system with metal panels, and high-performance glass. The front will feature lots of glass and natural light, and the glass will be etched with a design of an electron microscope image courtesy of endowed professor John Lemasters.

What will the inside look like?

Visitors will walk into a large open lobby with a terrazzo floor and wood paneling. It will be a fresh, modern, and almost European style. The lobby can also transition to a meeting space, like a convention hall with display screens. Glass doors on either side of the entrance will lead to student study spaces.

Faculty and staff offices are designed with a more collaborative layout, each with an interactive screen and wired for flexibility. A classroom dedicated to pharmacy will have a tiered auditorium, enhanced with screens and AV overlay, with advanced acoustical design that controls sound distribution.
