The rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccine introduced a lot of lay people to the process of drug discovery. In the August episode of MUSC’s “Science Never Sleeps” podcast, the MUSC College of Pharmacy’s Pat Woster, SmartState Endowed Chair in Medicinal Chemistry and chair of the Department of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences, and one of his Ph.D. students, Catherine Mills, gave insights into how something like the vaccine arrives to market.

Host Loretta Lynch-Reichert talked with Woster about drug development, which is particularly relevant given the importance of the COVID vaccine. How did those vaccines get approved so quickly and still maintain safety? Woster gives insight to that question along with the “Chasm of Death,” what it means to be target-rich and pipeline-poor, speed-dating with angels, and many other facets of drug discovery.
