George Reid never wavered when it came to the things that were most important to him: his family and his faith. But he also found the time and passion to make a world of difference to his profession and his college.

George Reid passed away this week, leaving a profound legacy in South Carolina pharmacy.

“Dr. Reid has been a vital part of the MUSC pharmacy family for many years and we greatly valued his wisdom, experience and friendship,” said Philip Hall, dean of the MUSC College of Pharmacy. “His insight helped steer the college at many crossroads over the years and we will miss him dearly. Our thoughts go out to George's wife, Leah Small Reid, and their children, Anna, Paul, and Scott and their families.”

George Reid was a key fixture in South Carolina and MUSC pharmacy for 40 years, winning multiple honors, including the 2018 George D. Schwerin Mentor Award from the South Carolina Society of Health-system Pharmacists and the 2022 MUSC College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumnus Award.

He served as director of pharmacy services at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and as director of pharmacy at AnMed Health, a comprehensive health system in Anderson, South Carolina that is Anderson County’s largest employer.

At MUSC, he served on several leadership boards, including the MUSC College of Pharmacy Alumni Board of Advisors and the South Carolina College of Pharmacy Leadership Advisory Council, and he was a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council. He helped shape the college with input on strategy, curriculum, experiential education, and has enabled many MUSC pharmacy students to get important health-system rotations.

In 2021, his family surprised him with the gift of naming a room in the new pharmacy building. At the time, he commented on his long relationship with the MUSC College of Pharmacy… and noted another long relationship that began there:

“MUSC, and the College of Pharmacy, holds a special place in my heart… It is hard to believe that I graduated over 40 years ago.  I have enjoyed working with the College leaders through the years to give advice on the current state of Health-System pharmacy and how to incorporate that into the curriculum. For many years, I served as a preceptor for the students… MUSC is a special place… not only for the top-notch academics but that is where I met my future wife, Leah Small Reid.”
