On June 10, Elizabeth Weed and Celia Dennison were recognized for outstanding contributions to the world of experiential education with a certificate from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Experiential Education Section, presented by MUSC College of Pharmacy Dean Philip Hall on behalf of the AACP.

Experiential education posed one of the most challenging issues to pharmacy programs during the pandemic. Many rotation sites were closed or limited due to safety protocols. Preceptors and students created virtual rotations and adapted schedules. New sites had to be found, new preceptors trained, switched sites accounted for… and experiential staff around the country were the ones holding the reins of these wildly bucking horses.

The AACP Experiential Education Section annually presents the Award of Excellence in Experiential Education to an individual. This year, it recognizes them all.

“With the challenging events in our country in 2020, the Experiential Education Section Awards Committee, with support from AACP, has decided that this year’s award should honor all members of Experiential Education Departments at each institution for their tremendous efforts at keeping the programs operating despite unimaginable pandemic related challenges,” the Experiential Education Awards Committee announced.

Weed, the director of experiential education and assistant professor of clinical pharmacy and outcomes science, and Dennison, assistant director of experiential education, will be featured with their experiential education colleagues in a montage for the AACP Experiential Education Section Community at the AACP Annual Meeting.

“Our experiential team was relentless in making sure no student missed a needed rotation during a time they were in short supply,” Hall said. “Our students and the college were deeply grateful for their dedication this past year, as I’m sure was true all around the country. They did a tremendous job.”
