Kathy Chessman has won many awards during her illustrious career. So it is hard to pick any given year as particularly special.

  • Was it the year she was named chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences?
  • The year she was named MUSC College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumnus?
  • One of the many years she was singled out by students as a Teacher of the Year?

There are a lot of contenders. But surely 2023-2024 will have to rank among them. After all, she’s been named Pharmacist of the Year not once, but twice.

Earlier this academic year, she was named Women Pharmacist of the Year by the Pharmacists Moms Group, a national organization some 45,000 members strong. And last week, she was selected as Pharmacist of the Year by the South Carolina Society of Health-system Pharmacists (SCSHP) during the SCSHP Annual Meeting March 7-8, 2024.

The SCSHP Pharmacist of the Year Award is given annually to an active health systems pharmacist with sustained achievements and contributions to health-systems pharmacy and/or involvement with the Society.

Chessman earned her bachelor’s in biology from Presbyterian College before earning both bachelor’s and Pharm.D. degrees from MUSC. She completed a residency in pediatric pharmacotherapy and nutrition at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. She is board certified in nutrition support pharmacy, and she was named fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in 2004.
