Sarah Smith already knows where she’s headed after graduating in May. The fourth-year pharmacy student at the MUSC College of Pharmacy has accepted a fellowship with Alexion (AstraZeneca Rare Disease).

The US Medical Affairs (USMA) is a two-year rotational program with six-month rotations in US Medical Excellence, US Medical Director, and US Medical Science Liaison positions.

The final six months is an elective rotation the resident chooses, which can extend one of the first three or be in a variety of areas like regulatory advertising and compliance, quality affairs, clinical development, pharmacovigilance, health economics and outcomes research, and others.

Alexion is the group within AstraZeneca focused on developing and delivering innovative medicines for rare diseases.

Smith has already earned an MBA through MUSC’s Pharm.D./MBA concurrent degree program and will earn her Pharm.D. this spring. She has been a student leader during her academic career, serving as the student government representative for her class, president of the Industry Pharmacists Organization, student ambassador, and inter-professional chair within Phi Delta Chi.

Before coming to MUSC, she completed a BS in Biological Sciences at Clemson University.

“Alexion’s dedication to transforming the lives of patients with rare diseases through innovative therapies inspires me, and I am so excited to contribute to this mission as part of their incredible team,” she posted. “I look forward to the opportunity to further develop my skills and make a meaningful impact in the field of medical affairs. Here’s to the next chapter!”
